Garo's Latin Page!

Ever since I first read about the ancients in the history books I have been fascinated by them and their lives. Their history, their culture and their art have always drawn me. In my first quarter at the University of California, Los Angeles I had a chance to really do something about it by taking Latin as a language. I had read a lot of stuff in encyclopaedias and had read quite a few greek plays as well but this was better than the rest.

The following are a few of the quotes that I have read and been impressed by since then. You might have found a few of them on my signature file at some time or the other as well.

  • "Veterem iniuriam ferendo invitamus novam" - Publilius Syrus
By enduring old injuries we invite new ones.

  • "Dum vita est, spes est." - Cicero (Epistulae ad Atticum)
While there is life, there is hope. (Letters to Atticus)

  • "In triumpho Caesar praetulit hunc titulum: 'Veni, vidi, vici.'"
Caesar displayed this placard in his victory procession:
    I came, I saw, I conquered.

(Celebrating his quick victory at Zela in Asia Minor in 47 B.C.)

  • "Aequum animum in rebus difficilibus serva" - (Horace)
Keep a calm mind in difficult things.

  • Ratio ducat, non fortuna. - (Livy)
    Let reason lead, not luck.

  • "Stat rosa pristina nomine, Nomina nuda tenemus"
The rose stands by it's ancient name while we hold our naked names.

  • "Quos deus vult perdere prius dementat" - (Publius Syrus circa 42 B.C., Maxims) Whom God would destroy, he first drives mad.
